Tasty Treats that are also Good for Teeth

applesIt’s Spring! FINALLY! The staff at our Georgetown dental office is excited to get outside and get active with family and friends. We’re also thinking about eating healthier and lighter, and shaking off the heavy comfort food that we indulged in all winter long. We wanted to tell you about some healthy snacking ideas for spring that are not only tasty, they’re also good for your teeth!

Cheese Please!

Cheese is a great, healthy snack for kids and adults because of all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients inside, including calcium for strong tooth enamel. But that’s not all…. Chewing on a piece of cheese also increase the saliva in your mouth, keeping bad bacteria and sugars from lingering on your tooth surfaces.

An Apple A Day

Apples are great for your teeth because eating them also increases the saliva in your mouth. Not only that, the rough texture of apples stimulates your gums as it lightly scrubs against your teeth. (Apples are also full of fiber, which is great for your overall health.)

Almonds and Sunflower Seeds

Nuts like almonds and seeds like those from our happy sunflowers are a great source of protein and calcium while still being really low in sugar. Maybe try some in homemade hummus! (YUM!)

Low-Fat Yogurt

You’ve probably heard those commercials for yogurts with probiotics in them that are so good for your tummy. Well guess what? All that good bacteria is great for your gums, blocking out the bad bacteria that can lead to cavities.

If you’re getting hungry, consider going to one of the three local Farmers Markets here in Georgetown to stock up on those healthy snacks!

Austin Ave. The Sun City Farmers Market is every Tuesday, 9 a.m. till Noon at 2 Texas Drive, and the Wolf Ranch Farmers Market is every Saturday, 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Wolf Ranch Shopping Center.

Yoga – Yes, we’re thankful for yoga! The mental and spiritual benefits of yoga are far reaching and help to make us better, stronger people.

Compassion – we’re so lucky to be able to give back to our community in a number of ways, from helping with donations to the Hope Alliance to helping the local dog shelter or donating free dentistry to someone in need. We’re also lucky to have community events like the Georgetown Farmers Market to help bring us together with other members of the community.

Clean Water – In the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey and Maria, we’re thankful to have clean water and running electricity, as some people who were affected by the storms are still living without these daily necessities.

Our Team – The Trade Winds Dental team is family! It’s wonderful to be able to get up in the morning and know that we’ll get to work with such wonderful people who truly want to make a difference in people’s lives.

Paying it Forward

A total stranger just chose to do a nice thing for you, and that positive feeling makes you smile and perhaps changes your entire outlook on the day. At Trade Winds Dental, we know all about this concept and call it by it’s more well known name….. Paying it Forward.

You may be thinking, what in the world would my Georgetown dental office know about paying it forward? You may be surprised to know that our team tries to perform random acts of kindness whenever possible. You might not know about it, because we aren’t looking for recognition or anything in return. That’s why we wanted to tell you how these little things in life can not only give you an incredible feeling of satisfaction, but also can create a ripple effect from one recipient to the next.

Take for example our toothbrush donation program. If you are replacing your toothbrush (as the ADA recommends every three months or so), bring the old one into our office for recycling. In addition to removing that plastic from landfills, we also take the time to donate $ 1 per toothbrush to Hope Alliance. It’s not something that we HAVE to do, it’s something small that we CAN do that makes a big impact.

Dr. Hennington and his staff also donate dentistry throughout the year to people in need right here in our community. For example, a local veteran on a reduced income who also takes care of his mother had put off dental work to the point where it affected his ability to chew properly. The team at the Georgetown dental office was more than happy to assist this man at no cost to him…. We simply asked him to pay it forward.

So the next time you’re in line to buy your coffee, or maybe having lunch at a diner, consider picking up the tab for a stranger. Or spending the day volunteering at a shelter instead of another Netflix binge day. Or simply helping your neighbor out and mowing the part of the lawn that you share. You never know, this simple act of Paying it Forward could result in something life changing.

Essential Information About Essential Oils

essential oilsThese days, people think of essential oils primarily for their scent – and we don’t dispute the health benefits of aromatherapy at all! But there is more to essential oils than meets the nose. In fact, if an oil is called a fragrance or fragrant oil, it is probably not an essential oil at all and will not have the healing power of a true essential oil.

Most people don’t realize it, but essential oils are not really oils at all. They do not contain fatty acids. Instead, they are distilled or highly concentrated plants. The essence of the plant. An example of how concentrated these oils are is how many roses it takes to make one pound Bulgarian rose oil. Go ahead and guess – 10? 20? No, it takes 4,000 pounds of roses to make one pound of rose essence! Even the common lavender essential oil takes 100 pounds of plants to make a pound of essential oil.

Because they are so concentrated, they must be used with care. Most essential oils should not be used in their undiluted form directly on the skin. They must also be kept out of the reach of children, and should never be used during the first trimester of pregnancy without the advice of a healthcare practitioner. They should also never be taken internally.

Here at Trade Winds Dental, our Georgetown dental staff loves essential oils, both in the office and as something for patients to use at home. They allow patients to take some of their health care into their own hands to strengthen their bodily systems, protect against illness, lift their moods, and soothe their spirits. In other words, essential oils can help our patients heal – mind body and spirit, a principle that is at the center of our dental practice.

Here are a few “essential” essential oils to get you started:

Tea Tree Oil – Great for skin and hair, it is safe to apply topically. It does have a strong scent but is very effective against dandruff, fungus, and blemishes.

Calendula – Made from the petals of the Marigold flower, calendula oil has amazing healing properties. Very gentle on the skin, it can be used as a topical anti inflammatory, antibacterial, and general skin soother for bumps and bruises. Some people use a few drops in their baths to soothe psoriasis.

Lavender Lavender does much of its healing through its beautiful scent. A few drops in your bath or diluted with water and sprayed on your pillow can ease tension, soothe frazzled nerves, and help you get a good night’s sleep.

Peppermint – Feeling a little nauseated? Peppermint oil is a great anti nausea and digestive aid. It can also soothe coughs when applied to the chest, remove odors from shoes, and even help deter spiders! Plus it freshens our breath and can be added to coconut oil for oil pulling.
