Here at Trade Winds Dental, we get a lot of questions regarding teeth whitening. Dr. David Hennington took some time to answer some of your frequently asked questions about teeth whitening. Here is what he had to say:

Q. What is the difference between in-office whitening, take-home whitening kits, and over-the-counter products?
A. In-office whitening procedures and take-home whitening kits provided by your dentist have a higher concentration of active ingredients. They also have custom fit trays to ensure maximum whitening. Both of these whitening procedures are done with the supervision and guidance of a dentist. Over-the-counter products have a lower concentration of active ingredients so that they can be used safely without the supervision of a dentist.

Q. Do whitening toothpastes really make a difference?
A. Whitening toothpastes do not whiten teeth significantly. In fact, these toothpastes can even be harmful due to high abrasiveness. This abrasiveness can wear your teeth down and hurt the enamel that protects your teeth.

Q. How do I get my teeth whiter without them looking unnatural?
A. Teeth rarely, if ever, whiten to the point of looking “unnatural,” so that should not be an issue.

Q. Can I use whitening products on my teeth while receiving orthodontic treatment?
A. No. If you want to use whitening products, it is recommended that you wait until you complete your orthodontic treatment.

Q. Can I use whitening products on my dentures?
A. No. Only use denture-specific products on your dentures.

Q. What is the best over-the-counter whitening product?
A. All over-the-counter whitening products have significant limitations. It is recommended that you speak to your dentist about whitening your teeth in order to yield significant results.

Q. After I’ve received in-office teeth bleaching, what’s the best way to maintain my bright smile?
A. In order to maintain your smile it is recommended that you get regular maintenance at your dentist’s office. Periodic whitening “touch-ups” with trays can also help you maintain your white teeth. The dentist will inform you of the best method to keep your smile white.

Q. What foods and beverages will discolor my teeth? Which foods and beverages taste good but won’t discolor my teeth?
A. While there are many foods and beverages that can discolor your teeth, the top offenders are coffee, some teas, red wine, and soda.

Q. Is tooth discoloration genetic?
A. There is a genetic component to the natural color of your teeth. However, there are many non-genetic factors that will discolor your teeth. Maintaining good oral health is the best way to fight tooth discoloration.
